OPEN HEART... GRATITUDE... INNER PEACE.
HOW SOUND CAN BRING YOU THERE.
This book is dedicated to my brother Rick, who first introduced me to the magic of music and sound...
And to Stephen Russell (Barefoot Doctor) who, many years later, awakened my awareness to the
healing power within the sound.

PROMOTING WELLNESS & BALANCE THROUGH
SOUND, BREATH, MOTION & INTENTION
Chakra Play draws on a number of modalities to bring about balance in body, mind and spirit. Depending on your particular life situation, we integrate sound, pranayama (breathwork), heart rhythm meditation, yoga and Qigong flows, mudras (hand yoga), acupressure points, affirmations, and very significantly, intention.
Each session is individually orchestrated for the unique needs of each client.
"The Tao is the Music, I am the Instrument, We are the Song.
The Incredible World of Sound...
Stay close to any sounds that make you glad you are alive. - Hafiz We are quite integrated into the world of sound often without even considering how it is affecting us. Someone says something funny, we laugh. Something exasperates us, we sigh. Feeling a little down? Put on some upbeat music. Having trouble sleeping? Put on some gentle music. The phone rings in the middle of the night, our heart races. Our cat purrs, we smile and relax... You get where I'm going.
Sound and Healing
Meet, Greet, & Release...Both sound and emotion are vibratory in nature. We can use sound to transmute emotions and dissolve obstacles that are creating fear, resistance and attachment in our lives - blockages to our happiness. By tapping into the basis of the stuck emotion we can pinpoint a chakra (energy field) that is being triggered. Then, using the seed sound associated with this chakra, we are able to rely on the combination of tone and intention to resonate our being back into balance. Emotional disturbances that are not addressed can and will escalate into phyiscal manifestation, hence the importance of recognizing and releasing them.
Also of great importance is the silence that follows the sound... this is the healing space. This is where the vibration does its magic.
Chakra Play also celebrates the merging of sound with our energy fields using interval type toning. Because we are all vibratory creatures, the use of sound, combined with the intention of bringing balance can have very dramatic healing effects.
Depending on a life situation, my experience is that a combination of energy fields is most likely being influenced. For example, if you are feeling the need for grounding as well as clarity in an important decision process, I would suggest that you use Chakra Play between the root chakra (stability and security) and the third eye (intuition and inner vision). Click here to see an example of that scenario.
Let's take a closer look now at the chakras themselves and then move on to more examples of how sound can bring us into equilibrium.
ABOUT OUR CHAKRAS
The word “chakra” is Sanskrit for wheel or disc and refers to the seven main fields of energy located in our etheric (subtle) body, the reservoir of our life force. These three-dimensional spinning vortices are focal points for the reception and transmission of this energy. The etheric body itself is the same shape as our physical body and extends out from this form, housing these wheels that are situated along the spinal column and up into the crown. (For the purpose of this book we will focus our attention on the seven main chakras, though there are additional chakras both above the head, below the feet, as well as various other locations within the body.)
JOY IN BALANCE
If we are well-balanced, “prana” or life force energy flows unimpeded along the energy highways within us, resulting in health from physical and emotional perspectives.
Bring to mind the most beautiful rainbow you can imagine and just as the colors in a rainbow merge into one another, the colors and energy in our chakras are inherently interrelated as well. When an imbalance occurs in one, it will have residual effects all along the energy pathway. These imbalances can occur when energy flows either too strongly or too weakly and sometimes a channel can be blocked entirely. A great analogy is that of a garden hose that has been sitting outside all winter. The first time you try to water your spring flowers, the flow from the spigot will most likely cough and sputter as it tries to maneuver its way past the mud, leaves and guck that have accumulated all winter long. Once the hose is cleared, however, the water flows freely. This is our goal as well. Remove the ‘guck’ and let it flow!
OUR SEVEN MAIN ENERGY FIELDS AT A GLANCE...
1) ROOT CHAKRA: (Muladhara) Our first chakra is located at the base of the spine and is the seat of stability and grounding. It is related to the element of earth and associated with the color red.
2) SACRAL CHAKRA: (Svadisthana) Our second chakra located in the sacral/pelvic region of our body, is the seat of creation, relationships and flow. It is related to the element of water and associated with the color orange.
3) SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA: (Manipura) Our third chakra is located in the solar plexus region of the body (behind stomach and just below diaphragm) and is the seat of personal power, courage and self-esteem. It is related to the element of fire and associated with the color yellow.
4) HEART CHAKRA: (Anahata) Our fourth chakra, located in the heart/chest area, is the seat of love, compassion and connection to all sentient beings. It is related to the element of air and associated with the color green.
5) THROAT CHAKRA: (Vishuddha) Our fifth chakra, located in the throat area, also houses the thyroid gland, shoulder and neck region, and is the seat of communication and self-expression. It is related to the element of ether and associated with the the color blue. This is obviously also a very important chakra in terms of sound in our lives.
6) THIRD EYE CHAKRA: (Ajna) Our sixth chakra, located between the brows, is the seat of perception and command, the intuition that guides us. It is related to the element of light and associated with the color indigo.
7) CROWN CHAKRA (Sahasrara) Our seventh chakra, located at the top of the head, is the seat of our connection to the Divine. It is associated with the color of lavender or white.
OUR CHAKRAS - IN BALANCE AND OUT...
When our chakras go out of balance, there will initially be an emotional repercussion, that if left unaddressed will likely progress into a physical manifestation. By recognizing characteristics when they first appear, we can more easily regain equilibrium and prevent the physical ramifications.
Below you will find the attributes of each chakra from an emotional perspective, when in balance as well as when there is 'too much' or 'too little' energy flowing. We take a brief look at what the physical indications might be as well as questions you can ask yourself to determine your current status.
ROOT CHAKRA - In Balance: Connection with earth, feelings of security, stability and belonging
Too little: Fear, flightiness, loss of appetite
Too much: Overeating, compulsive behavior, apathy, fatigue
Which can lead to... Weight fluctuations, immune disorders, joint problems
Question you can ask yourself... Am I in need of grounding?
SACRAL CHAKRA - In Balance: Able to 'go with the flow,' comfortable with change, motivated to act on desires
Too little: Resistance to flow, anxiety around change
Too much: Moodiness/restlessness, addictive behavior
Which can lead to... Pelvic, lower back pain, bladder troubles, reproductive/prostate issues
Question you can ask yourself... Do I need movement to inspire the creative process?
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA - In Balance: Sense of personal power, moving forward with confidence
Too little: Lack of self-esteem, excessive shyness
Too much: Anger, becoming overly competitive
Which can lead to... Ulcers, liver & pancreas disorders, can’t keep warm OR hot flashes
Question you can ask yourself... Do I need to increase my personal power?
HEART CHAKRA - In Balance: Able to give and receive love, a sense of connection with all beings
Too little: Isolation, sense of not caring, judgmental
Too much: Enabling behavior, jealousy, hard time saying “No”, grief
Which can lead to... Heart or lung ailments, circulation issues, breast problems
Question you can ask yourself... Am I in need of more compassion in my life (both for myself and/or others?)
THROAT CHAKRA - In Balance: Able to authentically speak our truth, sharing our gift of expression with the world
Too little: Withdrawal, fear of speaking truth, sense of frustration, loss of power
Too much: Gossip, speaking out of turn, inability to make decisions
Which can lead to... Throat & thyroid issues, TMJ, neck & shoulder stiffness
Question you can ask yourself... Am I able to speak my truth (with myself or others)?
THIRD EYE CHAKRA: - In Balance: Our sense of intuition is strong and guided, illuminating the path before us with the light of knowing
Too little: Dulled sense of inner vision, lack of focus, feeling their aren’t any options
Too much: Spaciness, lack of grounding, “monkey” mind
Which can lead to... Dizziness, headaches, nightmares
Question you can ask yourself... Am I able to tune into the intuitive guidance within me?
CROWN CHAKRA - In Balance: A sense of connection with the Divine and Unity Consciousness as life force energy flows freely
Question you can ask yourself... Do I need more trust in my connection to the Divine?
So now let's look at some possible scenarios as well as related sounds that you can use to stay balanced and healthy in body, mind and spirit.
Each of our chakras has a classic vibratory 'seed sound' (bija mantra) that correlates with that particular region in our body. Below you will find these sounds as well as others that I have found resonate for me personally. (You will also find sound files below to listen to how each of these is pronounced.)
My suggestion would be to try out the traditional sounds, the sounds that I have chosen and then see if there is a particular tone that speaks to the uniqueness of you. There is no right or wrong here. It's all vibration.
There are also different pitches and notes that correspond to the different chakras, but for our purposes here just find a tone that is comfortable for your own range i.e. no straining of the vocal chords. If it feels good to try a lower or higher pitch, by all means, go for it. Listen to your intuition and see what energizes you. This is supposed to feel good.
Also, coming into SILENCE after toning is highly recommended and extremely powerful. "Music is the space between the notes" (Claude Debussy)
INTERVAL PLAY USING CHAKRA SOUNDS & INTENT We can use seed sounds to address issues, questions and general life situations through the interplay of breath and toning - moving between the two (or more sounds) with intent. In each of these scenarios, we breathe into the initial chakra and exhale toning the sound of that chakra. The following inhale sends light to the next chakra involved and the exhale is the tone of that chakra sound. The breath and light continue to travel between the two (or more) chakras with toning of the sounds related to that energy field.
In the interest of keeping it simple, we will be using only the traditional Sanskrit Seed sounds for the following examples.
RECAP CHAKRA SOUNDS (From Root to Crown)
Traditional : LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, OM, SILENCE
For example: You must deliver difficult news or share something uncomfortable with someone close to you and are finding it difficult to relay. In this situation, you could embrace the gifts of the solar plexus chakra - offering courage and confidence and combine that with the ability to speak your truth in the throat chakra. Hence, the INTERVAL PLAY BETWEEN RAM and HAM
Scenario 1: Delivering a difficult message to a someone close to you:
INTERVAL PLAY BETWEEN...
Solar Plexus Chakra for courage: RAM
Throat Chakra for speaking truth: HAM
OR...FINDING BALANCE BETWEEN ROOT AND THIRD EYE (STABILITY AND VISION): LAM and OM
I see a distinct correlation between these two chakras. If we are feeling 'stuck' (i.e. too much root going on) we will be foggy as far as our direction. If we are experiencing 'monkey' mind and headed in too many directions, we will feel as if the ground is moving under our feet. Coming to a balanced space between these two energy fields can greatly enhance the dynamic of feeling grounded yet able to trust one's intuition in moving forward.
Scenario 2: Finding balance between stability and vision:
INTERVAL PLAY BETWEEN...
Root Chakra for grounding: LAM
Third Eye Chakra for clarity: OM
FOLLOWING THE CALLING OF YOUR HEART (AND/OR DETERMINING WHAT THAT CALLING IS): RAM and YAM
Whether we know exactly what our heart is asking of us on this journey - or we have an inkling of what it feels like but can't quite decipher the direction, this Chakra Play Interval calls on our God/Goddess Energy to kindle the flame of passion and then moves into the chamber of the heart to allow it to glow forth.
Scenario 3: Allowing the Warrior Spirit within to Awaken the Calling of your Heart: INTERVAL PLAY BETWEEN...
Solar Plexus Chakra for courage: RAM
Heart Chakra for heart-based guidance: YAM
as well as affirmation & pranayama... Click here to listen and play along.
The Warrior Spirit within me awakens and liberates the calling of my heart.
Scenario 4: Clearing the blocks from our systems that would prevent perfect, vibrant health. INTERVAL PLAY BETWEEN...
Sacral Chakra - act of creation: VAM
Throat Chakra - a an expression of that creation and our freedom
to celebrate that truth: HAM
I feel that the combination of these two fields will ignite a flow of energy that will release stagnation and support overall wellbeing.
As you can see, any number of topics can be addressed. Also, adjusting the pitch, visualizing color, adding in correlating mudras or yoga movement will also deepen the practice.
Maureen Kelly is an outstanding person and an amazing teacher: intelligent, compassionate, warm, and completely non-judgmental. Her gentle approach comes from her heart and years of experience. She has an amazing ability and genuine desire to help heal, both physically and emotionally, all those who are fortunate to meet her. She guides her students to listen to their bodies and to go at their own speed, bringing real internal power and peace to each participant. Maureen intuitively understands how negative emotions can manifest themselves through physical maladies. She is a true healer. My time with her is a gift to myself, which in turn is a gift to my family and my friends.

Another fun and powerful way to use CHAKRA PLAY is through the use of Angel Oracle cards. I prefer the Archangel cards from Doreen Virtue. Intuitively choosing 3 cards and then relating their 'story' to the chakras that are asking for attention can be an amazing way to come into balance. Each time I do this both for myself and with others, the chosen cards seem to magically offer a path to healing, even if the situation was not specifically addressed.
Chakra Play also looks at how our inborn tendencies have a distinct impact on our overall balance. This knowledge allows us to celebrate our strengths as well as monitor areas in our various energy fields where a proclivity for ‘tipping the scales’ may exist. We do this by addressing four general "ELEMENT TYPES" - Earth, Water, Fire and Air - and thereby determine innate gifts as well as vulnerabilities and how to moderate them.
A Chakra Play session can also include a look at our 'Energy Type' in depth (full MBTI® assessment). For information on ENERGY TYPES- PERSONALITY, CHAKRAS & BALANCE (the book), please click here.
A CHAKRA PLAY Session can be arranged in person locally or by SKYPE if we are at a distance. This can be a stand alone session or include other healing modalities as well.
If you find yourself in a life scenario that is causing confusion or playing havoc with your health, I am now offering 'mini-sessions' - either through email or Skype.
Anemail session would require a short note from you explaining your situation and I will recommend (also via email) a specific Chakra Play as well as an affirmation for you to bring about balance.
AnSkype session would also require a short note from you explaining your situation and we would then meet for approx. 20 minutes via Skype to practice the specific Chakra Play and affirmation addressing your issue. EMAIL SESSION: $15.00 MINI-SKYPE SESSION: $25.00
